Navigating the permit system is the first step to planning your trip to the Island in the Sky backcountry. The National Park Service strictly limits access to the White Rim Road to protect the fragile desert environment.

How much does it cost to enter Canyonlands?

Standard vehicle entry is $30, which grants access to the park for seven days.

You pay this fee at the entrance station or online. If you hold an America the Beautiful pass, entry is free. This fee covers basic access but does not allow you to drive the backcountry trails.

Do I need a permit for the White Rim Road?

Yes, all vehicles and bicycles must have a backcountry permit to drive the White Rim Road.

The park limits day-use to exactly 50 vehicle permits and 50 bicycle permits per day. Group sizes are capped at three vehicles and 15 people. You must secure these permits on Recreation.gov well in advance.

How do overnight backcountry permits work?

You need an overnight permit to camp at one of the 20 designated backcountry campsites.

Overnight groups are limited to three vehicles and 10 people per site. Campsites like White Crack are highly competitive. You must reserve these exactly four months in advance on Recreation.gov.

Do guided tours include the backcountry permits?

Yes, booking a guided 4x4 expedition covers your necessary National Park permits.

Operators like Navtec or Rim Tours secure the day-use permits for you. Full-day trips start around $298. This allows you to skip the hassle of booking your own permit.
